ROLLING Rolling is a metal forming process which is used for giving different shapes to materials in industry. Metal is proceeding between roll.
Rolling is classified into two groups as hot and cold rolling.
Hot rolling is applied when the temperature of material is greater than the temperature of crystallization.
Cold rolling is applied when the temperature of material is under the temperature of crystallization.
Advantage of Cold Rolling
-Smooth surface -production of special physical shaped material
-Not defected dimensions -High resistance
-High mechanic properties
Advantage of Hot Rolling
-Producing small cross-section materials
Disadvantage of Cold Rolling
-Needing great power and force
Disadvantage of Hot Rolling
-Deforming structure of casting

Rolling has different arrangement types of roll such as double, triple, sextet, twelfth and twentieth.

Usage Fields and Examples for Rolling Process

Rolling process is used in many fields in industry such as building and transportation. Rolled materials are classified into four main groups as;
Steel shapes and parts
Plate and sheet shapes
Special purposed rolled materials
Tube and pipe shapes

1. Steel shapes and parts are used nearly in all branches of industry. They are classified into two groups as special purposed and general purposed. General purposed materials are circles, squares, flat plates, wire rod, angles etc. Special purposed parts are used generally in building, transportation sectors of industry. For instance; rails, rods used to support buildings and so on.
2. Flat materials that are 4mm in thickness are called plate and that are up to 4mm (including 4mm) are called sheet. They are used generally in bridge and ship building.
3. Special purposed rolled materials are generally used in vehicles and buildings such as tyres, half rolled wheels, die-rolled products (used to strengthen the building) etc.
4. Steel pipes and tubes are also classified into three groups;
Seamless tubes
Furnace-welded tubes
Electric welded tubes
Rolling process is used in third group of tube forming in order to give shape to tubes.
Furthermore, rolling is used in roof system of buildings, in technologic and coin shaped materials such as medallion.
